Uncategorized

Lipedema being a connective tissue disorder, though presents as deposition of excessive fat in the extremities, also has a bearing on other body tissues like the lymphatics, veins, fascia, ligaments and even the joints. Lipedema progresses rapidly in some and not so rapidly in others. There are 5 types of lipedema presentation depending on the regions affected by it. Inability to fit into similar sized clothes is almost one of the first sign and symptom experienced by any lady. Other symptoms may vary depending on the stage and severity of the disease.

Symptoms of Lipedema

Some may have no symptoms whatsoever until late. Progressive increase in the lower body, i.e., the buttocks, thighs, legs and in certain women the arms and even forearms which are relatively resistant to diet and exercises is a characteristic feature of lipedema. The face neck chest and abdomen reduces with diet and exercises. Continuous dull aching pain with or without pressure, heaviness in the lower limbs, easy fatigability, easy bruising, spider veins and varicose veins are some other features of lipedema.

One of the classical signs is the appearance of wrist and ankle cuffs because lipedema abruptly stops at the ankle and wrist. As the disease progresses the severity of varicose veins may increase giving pain and burning sensation and other symptoms of varicose veins. Excessive deposition of fat in the hips and the inner thigh and around the knee joints could result in knock knees and over pronation of ankles leading to early arthritis and joint degeneration. Some women have hyper mobile and hyper flexible joints which also add to additional damage to the already prone degenerating joints

The excessive deposition of fat leads to kinking of the lymph channels causing progressive lymphatic stasis and leakage into the surrounding tissue leading to responsive and to non-responsive and resistant lymphedema. The feet which are normal till then start to swell up giving characteristic features of frank lymphedema. The heaviness, pain, inability to fit into proper clothes and various other symptoms could have a bearing on the psychological well-being of the individual.

It is imperative to form or join a group of like-minded people who understand, encourage and help one another to overcome the trauma. Also lipedema is a poorly understood condition and every attempt should be made to increase awareness in all sections of the population – health care professionals, patients, general public, government, non-government organisations, self-help groups so that a positive approach can be taken to provide a holistic treatment for the affected individuals.
